Counseling Services

According to Section 33 of the Texas Education Code, it is a school counselor’s responsibility to help each student develop their academic, career, personal, and social abilities through a comprehensive developmental guidance program.

A school counselor plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive developmental guidance program that promotes the educational, career, personal, and social development of students.  The comprehensive developmental guidance program should include the following 4 components: guidance curriculum, responsive services, individual planning system, and system support.

1. Guidance Curriculum
I provide bi-weekly classroom guidance lessons on a variety of topics to all students. These lessons focus on a specific issue that is positively or negatively impacting learning in the classroom/school and are designed around the Texas School Counseling Standards and American School Counselor Association standards.

Common topics/objectives:
Personal Safety, Conflict Resolution, College and Career Readiness, Interpersonal and communication skills, Bullying, Goal Setting, Decision making/problem solving, Motivation to achieve, Self knowledge and acceptance, and Responsible behavior

2.  Responsive services

This includes meeting with individual or small groups of students to counsel.

Small Group Counseling
Another counseling service available to students is small group counseling. This is done by grade level and topic, such as social skills and self-esteem building. These groups and topics are decided based on a needs assessment. In order for a student to participate in small group counseling (usually 5-7 participants), a permission form must be signed by his or her parent/guardian.
Typically, these groups will take place during lunch so students will not miss core academic subjects or specialty areas. Each lesson is designed around both the Texas School Counseling Standards and American School Counselor Association standards.

Common topics/objectives:
Making and Keeping Friends, New to Boone, Social Skills, Grief and Loss, Positive School Behaviors, Divorce, Anger Management, Stress Busters, and Self-Esteem.

Individual Counseling
Students at Boone Elementary also have an opportunity to receive individual counseling sessions as needed. During these sessions students may discuss issues that may be affecting academic success. In order for a student to receive individual counseling the student will be referred either by a teacher, administrator, parent, or a self-referral. Parental permission is needed after 3 sessions.

3.  Individual Planning System
This helps students plan, monitor, and manage the decisions needed to be made throughout their educational career to establish goals and develop future plans.  It educates students on understanding themselves and their strengths and weaknesses.

4.  System support
involves supporting the staff, parents, and members of the community in the context of the program’s goals.  This includes consulting and coordinating to help increase the effectiveness of the program and promote student success.  It may also involve professional development.
